According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the next device could incorporate a feature typical of professional cameras: a variable aperture in its main chamber.
The iPhone 18 will have a professional camera
The main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro, which maintains the 48 megapixel sensor known as Fusion, could be the first in the history of the iPhone to include this technology. Unlike the fixed apertures present in current models such as the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro (ƒ/1.78), a variable aperture would allow users manually control the amount of light that enters the sensor.
This advancement, common in DSLR and mirrorless cameras from brands such as Sony or Canon, would give photographers more control over the depth of field effect and the amount of light captured in different conditions. Instead of relying solely on software, users could physically adjust the aperture to get images closer to what you would take with an SLR camera.
The inclusion of a variable aperture would open the door to more sophisticated handling of background blur (bokeh) in images. Although current iPhones already have Portrait mode to simulate this effect digitally, a variable aperture would make it more natural and precise. However, as these are smartphones with smaller sensors than professional cameras, it remains to be seen to what extent this change will translate into significant improvements for the average user.
In addition, Kuo points out that Apple will collaborate with the Dutch manufacturer BE Semiconductor to develop the equipment that will assemble the diaphragm blades, the mechanical part that regulates light in camera lenses. This confirms Apple’s level of commitment to introducing this technology in its future devices.
The path to a more complete camera
Although there are still doubts about how Apple will implement this technology, the range of possibilities opens up if the iPhone 18 Pro also introduces a larger image sensor. A larger sensor would capture more light and offer substantial improvements in image quality, especially in low lighting conditions. This would complement the variable aperture, providing an experience closer to that of a professional camera.
Currently, rumors suggest that the variable aperture was originally planned for the iPhone 17, but Apple has decided to postpone this innovation until the iPhone 18 Pro, which is expected in September 2026.
As rumors grow and gain strength, it is clear that Apple is looking to bring mobile photography closer and closer to the level of professional cameras. Although the technical details and how it will play out in practice are still to be confirmed, the simple fact of considering a variable aperture in a smartphone marks a milestone in the design and functionality of mobile devices.
