WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app, announced a new feature allowing users to translate voice messages into text. This update is particularly useful in situations where listening to a voice message is not practical, such as in noisy environments or very quiet places like the cinema or library.
WhatsApp uses AI to translate your voice messages
Like iOS, transcription happens entirely on the device, ensuring it remains end-to-end encrypted and private, with no data shared with WhatsApp. Clearly, the company will not use this to target you with new advertisements.
After months of beta testing, the transcription feature, which most likely uses generative AI, is now ready for global deployment. It will be phased in over the coming weeks, initially supporting a few languages including French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian, with plans to expand language options in the future.
How to transcribe a message
To transcribe a message, the subsidiary of Meta explains that you need to simply long press on the voice message and select the Transcribe option.
Users can manage the feature in Settings to enable transcriptions or not, as well as preferred language. To do this, go to Settings > Chats > Transcribe voice messages.
This is the latest development from WhatsApp, having recently introduced its first widget.
