Little known in Apple’s catalog, the SuperDrive has for many years made it possible to read CDs and DVDs on MacBooks and iMacs equipped with USB-C ports (provided you have an adapter, because the SuperDrive is USB-A ). For several days, this accessory, which was popular before the explosion of streaming, has no longer been available on the Apple Online Store.

Global shortage for SuperDrive

Do you have a MacBook or iMac and need to play a DVD or audio CD, but you don’t know how because you don’t have a built-in player? Until today, Apple offered the SuperDrive, an external DVD and CD drive that allowed you to play your physical media. Unfortunately, this accessory seems to be abandoned, several months ago we noticed a huge weakness in stocks, obviously, the reports which mentioned the disappearance of this accessory were correct, because today we find a global shortage.

Marketed at the price of 89 eurosthe SuperDrive was an external DVD and CD drive with an elegant and compact design, which allowed it to be placed next to a recent Mac without an intergenerational visual shock. This device was very successful before 2015, then sales gradually collapsed following the extinction of CDs and DVDs in homes and businesses.

Here’s how Apple presents its SuperDrive on the Apple Online Store:

The sleek and compact USB SuperDrive.

At the office or on the go, read and burn CDs and DVDs with the Apple USB SuperDrive. It’s ideal for watching a DVD, installing software, or creating backup discs, among other things.

Barely larger than a CD case, the Apple USB SuperDrive slips easily into your bag when you’re on the road and takes up minimal space on your work table, at the office or at home.

You won’t have to worry about lost cables with the Apple USB SuperDrive. It connects to your Mac using a simple built-in USB-A cable. Macs with USB-C ports are supported via a USB-C to USB-A adapter. It doesn’t require a separate power supply and works seamlessly whether your Mac is plugged into a power outlet or on battery power.

16 years old, this accessory no longer has its place in 2024 where everything is digitized, whether it is films or even the software that we buy. The ongoing global shortage is likely not a sign of a new model coming, but rather the end of this type of product. In the meantime, you find alternatives to this withdrawalbut with a significantly less modern design.
