Philips has just presented its new ranges of televisions for the year 2023. These consist of two series: the top of the range OLED+908 and, just below, the OLED808 series. The first benefits from a panel embedding META technology with a layer of microlenses and the second uses an OLED_EX panel from last year. Philips promises a peak brightness of 2100 cd / m² and availability in the fall.
Every year, in the field of televisions, we gain a little more brightness, especially on OLED models. These try to compete with LCD screens, which are brighter and can be enjoyed more easily in brightly lit rooms. Each manufacturer always promises more, like Philips with its new 2023 OLED TV ranges.
The brand will market two new series in the fall: OLED+908 and OLED808. The main difference between the two is that the first uses an OLED MLA panel delivered by LG Display with META technology. This uses billions of microlenses and an algorithm to increase the brightness of the panel, which results in a peak of brightness superior to previous generations. Philips was able to demonstrate it to us, on prototypes.

LG also offers this technology on the G3 and M3 models. Note that Panasonic’s MZ2000 series also benefits from this. Philips, for its part, announces a value of 2100 cd / m², without further details on the conditions of the measurement. It is most certainly the Dynamic mode which does not offer good color fidelity. Filmmaker or Cinema modes should show much lower brightness peaks. We will verify this during our tests.
The second series, OLED808 uses an OLED_EX panel, from last year. We had measured a value of 840 cd/m² for the Philips 55OLED937, which the OLED808 TVs could offer.
More upscale, the audio system of the OLED+908 series is made up of a Bowers & Wilkins 3.1-channel system with a total power of 80 watts. It is equipped with 6 loudspeakers oriented towards the viewer, including a central channel, and a subwoofer associated with 4 passive membranes installed at the back of the screen. Its design is rather elegant with extremely thin metal edges and a slightly upward sloped and beveled lower part covered with a Kvadrat Audiomix fabric.
The foot is central, not very wide at the front, but a little more at the back while allowing installation on a small piece of furniture, even for a large size. The OLED+908 series is offered in 55, 65 and 77 inches. The first two use a leg that can swivel several degrees to the right or left to find the ideal angle, which is not the case for the 77-inch model using two legs.

On the OLED808 series, the audio part is based on a 2.1 system for 70 watts (50 watts for the 42-inch model). This series features a simple design with a dark metal frame. Again, the foot is central allowing the pivoting of the screen to the left or to the right. This series is available in different sizes of 42, 48, 55, 65 and 77 inches.
Philips OLED+908 and OLED808 TVs are powered by the 7th generation Philips P5 AI processor which incorporates a V2 version of Ambient Intelligence technology, which allows real-time adjustment of brightness, gamma and colorimetry according to conditions lighting. The model is equipped with several HDMI inputs, 2 of which are compatible with VRR, ALLM, G-Sync, Freesync Premium and Dolby Vision Ultra HD technologies up to 120 Hz.
All 2023 models of Philips OLED+908 and OLED808 series are powered by Google TV system. Philips has simplified access to certain settings, including those that allow you to change the image mode. Now it takes two taps to change them. Also, menus no longer take up as much screen space as they used to. We can finally view almost all of the image, which makes it possible to make more precise adjustments.
They come with a new remote control that is rechargeable via USB-C and has a backlight system for easy identification of the keys in the dark. It is now devoid of numeric keys, but also much more compact. It uses two specific buttons, in height and which can rock forwards or backwards, or be pressed, to change channels or manage the volume, reminiscent of those that Samsung uses for its remote controls of high-end models.
Of course, you can always count on the Ambilight system, which this year is on three sides and no longer four like last year.
For the moment, Philips has not communicated prices for the different models or a precise date of marketing. The brand says they will be available in the fall.
