It is precisely there where Google has been deploying its own fiber network for years. Google Fiber, which is already dropping that is preparing to greatly multiply the speed of its network. In fact, from Google they warn that their 2Gbps/1Gbps, which right now is marketed for 100 dollars a month, is about to stop being the fastest model. Google warns that 100Gbps is just around the corner.
50 times more speed than the current one
In Spain we already have quite crazy Internet connections, such as those that promise us up to 10Gbps of fiber that both Digi and Orange already offer, and that Telefónica has in its sights to take Movistar. Prices have not skyrocketed in our country eitherbeing able to have these speeds (in specific places with direct coverage) for about 10 euros/month on the usual prices.
Google wants to do something similar in the United States and lTake your fiber speed up to 100Gbps. Dinni Jai, current CEO of Google Fiber, has already commented that they have achieved speeds of 20Gbps during their tests in cities such as Kansas City, and that they continue on the right track “in our journey towards the 100-gig symmetric Internet”.
“We are very close […] This month, we’re taking our tests out of the lab and into the home, starting with our first trusted tester, Nick Saporito, Google Fiber’s head of business strategy. Take a closer look at that speed test below from Nick’s home in Kansas City: yes, what you’re seeing is a 20.2 gig download” – Dinn Jan on Google Fiber blog
With these speeds, Google wants to challenge even the services offered by some ISPs, with download speeds of up to 10Gbps in some cases depending on the contracted rate. As an added bonus, Google sews Fiber fees to its cloud storage service, Google Drive, where it already offers 1TB along with its rate of 2Gbps download with 1Gbps upload.
Thus, it is a matter of time before Google manages to offer its desired fiber optic speed, the 100Gbps that Jain talks about in the company’s blog. In the meantime, in Spain 10Gbps are already entering and we continue to grow. We will see who reaches the market first, if Americans or Europeans. And at what prices.
