Sony has launched its own movie streaming app for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and PlayStation Plus Premium and Deluxe subscribers will get a significant benefit.
PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can look forward to a new movie-themed perk. As part of the renaming of the Bravia Core app to Sony Pictures Core, which will be a brand new app on PS5 and PS4, Sony has announced several changes to the program that has begun rolling out.
If you’re not familiar with Bravia Core, it’s a movie service that Sony launched in early 2021 and has until now had availability limited to Bravia TVs and select Experia devices. With its arrival on PS5 and PS4, it now allows millions of players tobuy or rent up to 2,000 movies which they can then watch directly from their console, including films such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted, The Equalizer, No Hard Feelings, Bullet Train and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, among others.

PS Plus Premium subscribers can watch movies for free
While most films are paid, Sony also indicates that PlayStation Plus members in the Premium category will also have access to a “ catalog of 100 films » to watch on demand, without additional costs or advertisements. This selection is not final, and will be updated “periodically”. The films available as part of the initial offer include Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Elysium and Resident Evil Damnation.
PS5 and PS4 players will also have the opportunity to purchase select Sony Pictures films during an exclusive early access window where they can be the first to own the new Sony films. Sony notably cited Gran Turismo as an example of a film that players can already obtain in advance. However, in some regions, including France, you will have to wait until the end of the year to be able to buy it.
Sony improves its PlayStation Plus subscription offer
Until recently, many gamers found PS Plus to be comparable to Xbox Game Pass in terms of value, but that comparison was undermined when Sony confirmed a price increase for all three tiers of PS Plus starting at september. The arrival of this catalog of “free” films could therefore well be the reason behind this price increase.
Sony Pictures Core can stream HDR movies at up to 80 Mbps, which is “similar to a 4K UHD Blu-ray”. For comparison, many other services only stream movies at up to 25 Mbps. And according to the Bravia Core website, the app offers “ largest collection of IMAX Enhanced movies “. For many PS Plus Premium subscribers, this addition to the range of benefits could therefore make the recent price increase more acceptable.
Other benefits will be added over time, such as select animated content, which Sony will release more details on at a later date. “ This is just the beginning, and we plan to evolve Sony Pictures Core’s offerings and benefits over time, including a selection of hit animated content from Crunchyroll. We can’t wait for more exciting things to come, so stay tuned Sony said in a PS Blog update. The application is now available for download on your PS5 or PS4, if you have not already installed it.
