“In 2050, we should reach 50 degrees in summer. The vines will run out of water. We must find solutions to adapt agricultural practices. » In an interview given to Var MorningAntoine Nicault, director of the Air Climat association, coordinator and host of Grec-Sud, would like to alert the general public. It must be said that the South of France will be particularly affected by climate change.

A catastrophic scenario

The expert also indicates that he receives numerous messages from people from the Southern region who ask him where they should live in the coming years. He specifies: “Rising temperatures will reinforce the characteristics with longer and more intense dry periods, as well as greater precipitation”.

Likewise, the risk of fire, already very present, will only increase. And the specialist cites a chilling example: “You should know that an extreme fire generates its own climate by forming a tornado, for example. We saw it in California. ».

He is not the only one to sound the alarm for the South. Last month, the daily Humanity relayed the report from Réseau-Action-Climat which indicates that the regions of Corsica, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and Occitanie are already the areas most impacted by ongoing climate change with warming estimated at 1 .4 degree since the period 1950-1970.

The consequences here are once again disastrous: massive increase in areas affected by drought, which has a strong impact on agriculture by reducing yields. Another statistic spotted by our colleagues is chilling. We are therefore talking about, in the worst case scenario, a temperature rise of +7°C in summer by the end of the century in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur!

There is always time to react

While climatic disasters (hurricanes, floods) of often unprecedented scale tend to multiply, there is therefore an urgent need to act and reduce our carbon emissions to avoid the worst. Contrary to the fatalistic comments that we sometimes hear, recent measures taken on a global scale have already made it possible to reduce the rise in temperatures. However, we know that each fraction of a degree gained reduces the probability of seeing the darkest scenarios come true.

What to remember:

  • The temperature could reach 50 degrees in summer in the south of France in 2050
  • The consequences would be disastrous for the areas concerned: drought, fires, scarcity of agricultural land, climatic disasters, etc.
  • There is always time to act to avoid the worst
