Have you ever asked yourself the question “What would you be willing to do to get your iPhone back in a sticky situation?” »this 23-year-old Australian who is very attached to her iPhone didn’t ask herself the question, she went for it and probably regretted it. She remained suspended upside down between two rocks for 7 hours!
A very complicated job for rescuers
The addiction of young people to their smartphones no longer needs to be proven, however what we did not know is that some are ready to risk their lives to recover their precious device, as shown by a recent mishap that occurred in New South Wales, Australia. Matilda Campbell, a 23-year-old Australian, was enjoying a hike in the famous Hunter Valley on a Sunday afternoon. Everything was going normally until his iPhone, briefly taken out of his pocket, slipped from his hands and fell into a crevasse between two imposing rocks, weighing several hundred kilos. For Matilda, it was unthinkable to abandon her iPhone, although it was almost unrecoverable in such a situation.
Determined to find her iPhone, she tried to squeeze through the rocks. But instead of reaching for her iPhone with her hand, she fell three meters and found herself hanging upside down by her feet, trapped between two gigantic stones. This delicate situation required a large-scale intervention and mobilized numerous firefighters and paramedics in a very difficult intervention zone.
The rescue teams (quickly alerted by people walking around) took an hour to arrive on site. However, the real challenge was freeing the young woman, it took almost 7 hours to carefully move seven rocks, some of which weighed up to 500 kilos. A wooden frame was even built to prevent a possible collapse which would have made the situation worse.
Peter Watts, one of the paramedics at the scene, described the operation as unusual, complicated and unique in his career. Matilda Campbell was trapped throughout the afternoon and suffered significant injuries.
Following this incident, she was taken to hospital, suffering from cuts, bruises, but above all a fractured vertebra. As for his iPhone, which was the object of all his concerns, it could not be recovered. A rock crushed the aircraft during the rescue operation. Rescuers remind us that in such situations, human life must come first, even if attachment to smartphones sometimes leads to absurd risk-taking.
