Unlike the Apple Car, the new generation of CarPlay is alive and well. Despite a significant delay, it is still announced for 2024 on the Apple website. Icons linked to the system were also found in the third beta of iOS 18.2 released yesterday early evening.

CarPlay 2.0 is not dead

It’s been two and a half years (WWDC22) since Apple presented its new generation CarPlay. A new version which is no longer only installed in the entertainment info screen, but throughout the vehicle. A CarPlay 2.0 which is undergoing complex development.

Apple has not abandoned its CarPlay 2.0

Despite a list of automotive partners and a release planned for the end of 2023, Apple’s system supposed to redefine the driving experience is falling behind and is even starting to be forgotten. Apple having vaguely mentioned the subject during WWDC24 last June.

However, it appears that it is still in the works. As indicated by MacRumors, the code for beta 3 of iOS 18.2, available since last night, reveals new application icons relating to the famous new generation CarPlay. In this case, a “Media” icon and an “Air conditioning” icon.

On his official pageApple continues to indicate that CarPlay 2.0 will be officially supported in vehicles in 2024. To date, we are heading towards a postponement to 2025 at best. FYI, the Porsche 911 hybrid planned for 2025 should not be equipped with CarPlay 2.0. Proof once again that this is a thorny subject.

Definition of the next generation of CarPlay by Apple:

This next generation of CarPlay is the ultimate iPhone experience for the car. It provides content for all driver screens, including the dashboard. This ensures a cohesive design experience that is the best of your car and your iPhone – with designs for every automaker that express the character and brand of your vehicle. Vehicle functions like the radio and temperature controls are managed directly from CarPlay. And customization options ranging from widgets to a selection of curated gauge panel designs make it unique to the driver.
