Good news for Apple device users! Along with the new iMac, the company announced updated versions of its Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad. The main development? These accessories are now equipped with USB-C charging ports, while previous models used Lightning.
The big leap to USB-C
Apple provides the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard in the iMac M4 box, with the Magic Trackpad remaining an option. But these iconic peripherals were until now the last to resist the transition to USB-C. It is now possible to purchase them separately to use them with a Mac mini for example.
This may seem anecdotal, but it is an important turning point. Apple has been equipping its Macs with USB-C ports for years. The different iPad models have followed suit, as have the latest iPhones since last year. However, even very recent iMacs came with Lightning devices, but Apple has finally corrected this inconsistency.
No revolution, but the essential is there
With this new iMac M4, Apple has kept the general design of its Magic Mouse, its Magic Keyboard and its Magic Trackpad. No radical change in sight. You will still need to recharge your wireless mouse from the back, but with a USB-C cable this time. No wireless charging or MagSafe.
But the important thing is here: each accessory now uses USB-C to recharge, instead of Lightning. A detail that will greatly simplify users’ lives, by finally unifying connections. Finally, Apple is doing like the AirPods Pro 2 or the AirPods Max which switched to USB-C without any new thing in its own right.
Availability and price
You can already pre-order the new iMac, for delivery from November 8. In addition, it is also possible to purchase the new USB-C accessories separately on the Apple Store without having to wait for the iMac release.
In terms of prices, a few small increases: the Magic Mouse is still €85 while its black version is sold for €119 (+€10), the Magic Trackpad costs €135 in white and €169 in black (respectively +4 and €14). than before). The Magic Keyboard with Touch ID costs €199 in white and €229 in black (+14 and 24€). At Apple, the color black costs money.
With this transition, the Cupertino company takes a new step in the adoption of USB-C. Its Mac accessories were the last bastion to resist. It’s now ancient history!
