If you have regularly followed tech news in 2024, you may have heard about piracy of which the company Snowflake was a victima few months ago. The name of this American company may not mean anything to you, but this attack had a significant impact. Snowflake offers its cloud services to other companies. And among the customers who were affected by the hack, there is the American operator AT&T and the Ticketmaster platform, specialist in the sale of tickets for shows and sporting events.
In a report published in June, Mendiant, which conducted an investigation with Snowflake, announced that it had notified a total of 165 enterprise customers, which were potentially affected by the hack. For example, in a document sent to the SEC, the stock market watchdog in the United States, the operator AT&T indicated that hackers were able to access files containing data on calls and text messages from its customers between May 1 and October 31, 2022, as well as January 2, 2023. This gives an idea of the extent of the damage. “The data does not contain the content of calls or texts, personal information, such as social security numbers, dates of birth, or other personally identifiable information”nevertheless clarified the American operator.
In any case, the investigation has progressed since a suspect was recently arrested in Canada.
Suspect arrested in Canada
In an article published this week, Bloomberg discusses the arrest, in Canada, of a person suspected of being behind this massive hack. The information is also confirmed by a spokesperson for the Department of Justice of Canada, in a press release relayed by our colleagues at Bleeping Computer. “Following a request from the United States, Alexander Moucka (aka Connor Moucka) was arrested on a provisional arrest warrant on Wednesday, October 30, 2024,” he indicated.
“He appeared in court later that afternoon and his case was adjourned until Tuesday, November 5, 2024. As extradition requests are considered confidential interstate communications, we cannot comment further on this matter”, adds the spokesperson.
