Project Astra is the name of this innovation promised by Google which is based on AI with a multimodal understanding of the real world. We will just have to be patient before seeing it in action if we are to believe the latest quarterly conference of the Tech giant.

What Sundar Pichai said

The CEO of Google revealed the outlines of the Astra project schedule during the conference call this Tuesday, October 29. It states thus: “Google is developing experiences where AI can see and reason about the world around you. Project Astra is a glimpse into this future. We are working to deliver experiences like this from 2025”.

We won’t know more for the moment, but this “preview” mention is not a very good sign and therefore does not really confirm a launch to the general public next year.

What is Project Astra?

It must be said that this technology teased by the Mountain View firm has some impressive aspects. Last May, during the Google I/O conference, the company released a short video demonstration that shows how the combination of AI and augmented reality can work.

The user can thus query the conversational agent about objects near the camera. The whole thing can therefore be used on smartphones, but also on augmented reality glasses.

We therefore imagine AI being able to tell you objects that you may have lost or even guide you when shopping in stores or during your tourist visits. Why not consider Astra as an assistant during your DIY activities? As we will have understood, the possibilities offered by this type of technology are numerous, we will still have to see the effective realization of these numerous promises.

On its site, Google Deepmind also specifies: “With technology like Project Astra, it’s easy to imagine a future where people could have an expert AI assistant at their side, through a phone or glasses. Some of these features will be integrated into Google products, such as the Gemini app and web experience, later this year. » Unfortunately, we will have to be a little more patient if we rely on Sundar Pichai’s statement.

What do you think of this type of innovation? Please feel free to share your views in the comments.

What to remember:

  • The Astra project is moving forward, but the first deliveries are not expected before 2025
  • This technology is extremely promising with concrete uses
  • It could take conversational agents as we know them a step further
