Our colleagues at Auto Plus have published A guide to used SUVs to avoiddue to major defects which make them difficult to recommend despite their comfort, safety and apparent manufacturing quality.

Nissan, Audi, BMW, Opel, Peugeot, Citroën

Contrary to popular belief that Japanese and Korean vehicles are always very reliable, recent models like the Nissan Juke And Qashqai show significant weaknesses. Petrol versions equipped with the Renault 1.2 DIG-T (TCe) engine are known for their excessive oil consumption and can lead to engine failures despite regular monitoring. The 1.5 and 2.0 liter dCi diesel engines from before 2012 are not left out with problems with the connecting rods, turbos and injectors.

On the side of German manufacturers who are nevertheless renowned for their quality, we also find problematic models: theAudi Q5 first generation 2.0 TDI 170 diesel is subject to breakage after 120,000 km while the 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI gasoline versions consume excessive oil. At the house of BMWTHE X1 And X3 First generation diesel engines with some diesel engines suffer from timing chain problems that can lead to engine destruction.

The French manufacturers of the Stellantis group have not escaped criticism: the 1.2 PureTech engine has a design defect in the timing belt which can lead to engine failure. This problem affects many models Opel (Mokka “2”, Crossland, Grandland), Peugeot (2008, 3008, 5008 second generation) And Citroën (C3 Aircross, C5 Aircross). The diesel versions of these models also encounter problems with the BlueHDi pollution control system, in particular deformed AdBlue tanks and injectors that need to be replaced.

Please note, these reliability problems do not concern all vehicles of these brands but are sufficiently recurring to merit particular attention, our colleagues atAP. Potential buyers on the second-hand market must therefore be vigilant and research carefully before making their choice. It may be wise to favor models that have benefited from recalls or updates, or even to turn to more recent versions which have corrected these defects.

Before checking out, we therefore advise you to carry out a thorough inspection (by a professional) and check the vehicle’s maintenance history to avoid an unpleasant surprise.
