If you have a Mac and an iPhone, for example, surely you have acquired more space in ICloud, possibly the 50 GB for 0.99 eurosto be able to have the photos, documents, and everything necessary on both devices at the same time, synchronized and as a backup before any problem.
However, they may consume quickly, and you have realized that you have the full space, however, there are not so many photos or files that may be causing this, so why does it happen?
It is very simple, and that is that by default, the Mac add the folder of Documents and desktop to the copy of ICloud, What makes those files that you have and that you are not so interested that they are in copy, they are occupying space because you have the desk full of garbage, something that happens to the majority, and that we can easily deactivate.
Gain space in ICLOUD by eliminating desktop
To do this we must follow a few very simple steps, which we can do again if, after a while, we seek otherwise, that is, that the Mac desk with ICloud will synchronize again, thus being able to see it from our iPhone, for example.
- Open system preferences (or system configuration in macOS ventura or posterior).
- Click your name (Apple ID), at the top of the window.
- Select Icloud.
- Click on Icloud Drive > Options … (to the right of “Icloud Drive”).
- In the window that opens, Uncheck the box of:
- “Desk folders and documents”.
- You will be asked if you want to keep a local copy of the files. Click:
- “Keep a copy” If you want them to continue in your Mac but not in Icloud.
- Or choose “Remove from this Mac” If you want to release even more space (not recommended if you have no local copy).
- Ready. From now on, your Mac will no longer synchronize those folders with ICloud and you will release space.
It is possible that it takes a bit to see the space won, however, from now on you will not have this problem, and everything on the MAC desktop will only occupy space on the disc of that computer, and not in the cloud, unless, voluntarily, we upload that folder or file to Icloud, something that we can do perfectly.
Remember that this too Remove the Documents folder from the cloudwhere you may also have files, so the space gain will be greater, although you have to keep in mind that there will be no copy of them, so if something is important, make it manual.
And you, are you one of those who prefer to pay more space and have everything synchronized, or are you looking for this type of “tricks” to make the most of the 50 GB hired? In my case with having the photos safe, the rest I have on an external hard drive and in a NAS, so I prefer that all this will not be synchronized, and these options are good for me.
