Samsung has released a key update for several of its devices, especially those that have just completely revamped their mid-range lineup, the A56, A36, and A26. In fact, it’s expected to roll out to more models, so if you have a recent Galaxy, this could be one of the most comprehensive improvements we’ve seen hit the firm’s devices in recent months.
The first to be able to apply it will be the Galaxy A56, A36, or A26, as well as all members of the Galaxy S25 series, who will be the first to enjoy new features in the form of new smart functions and the always-important security patches that fix critical bugs.
The May 2025 update arrives with a bang
One of the most notable changes coming with this update is the ability to quickly launch Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, by holding down the side button. Previously exclusive to high-end phones like the Galaxy S series, this feature is now coming to the Galaxy A series as well, extending the AI experience to more users. If you’d rather keep using Bixby, don’t worry: you can easily reassign it from the settings.

What’s more, Gemini not only activates faster, but it’s also gained in capabilities. It can now integrate with native Samsung apps like Calendar, Notes, Reminders, and Clock, so you can create events, take notes, or set alarms using natural voice commands, just like a flagship phone.
The update also includes the May 2025 security patch, which addresses multiple critical vulnerabilities in various system components that affect different aspects of your mobile device. For example, some of these vulnerabilities directly affect the operating system framework, and the most severe could allow elevation of privilege without the user having to do anything. In the base system, another vulnerability could allow code execution without additional permissions. Bugs in the LTS kernel have also been fixed, and vulnerabilities related to Imagination Technologies and Arm components have been addressed.
And for users running Android 10 or higher, system updates are also included through Google Play, further enhancing protection without having to wait for manufacturers.
An update you should install as soon as possible
While Galaxy S25 users were expecting a major feature update this month, Samsung has opted to keep that version in testing, reserving the most significant improvements for June. However, that doesn’t mean the May patch should be ignored. Quite the opposite: this update keeps your device secure and prepares you for future One UI 7 improvements.
And if you own a Galaxy A series, you’re in luck because, as you’ve seen, you can enjoy high-end features like Gemini control, proving that Samsung isn’t just concerned about its most expensive smartphones, but its entire product line.
