Apple’s new iMac M4 is available for pre-order before its arrival this Friday, but a subtle change in the purchasing process has not escaped the most attentive users. Unlike previous models, it is no longer possible to acquire both the Magic Trackpad and the Magic Mouse in the same order. A choice that risks frustrating fans of matching accessories.
Keyboard, mouse or trackpad: you will have to choose
The iMac has always come with two accessories: the Magic Keyboard in the configuration of your choice, and your choice of a Magic Trackpad or a Magic Mouse. A logical combination, as most users do not need both pointing devices.
But until now, the most picky could still opt for the trackpad + mouse combo directly when purchasing their iMac, for a perfectly coordinated desktop in the same color. A possibility which seems to have disappeared with the iMac M4 according to testimonials on Reddit.
No accessories to match the unit
Of course, it is always possible to purchase a Magic Mouse or a Magic Trackpad separately as an addition. But these “standalone” versions are only offered in white and black, unlike the specific colors included with the iMac. It’s therefore impossible to have the keyboard, mouse and trackpad trio in the same color as your brand new computer – it’s up to me to buy another iMac.
It is unclear what motivated this change at Apple, beyond a desire to simplify the purchasing process. But it’s a blow for those who like to alternate between trackpad and mouse in their daily workflow, while maintaining aesthetic consistency. In the future, maybe Apple will offer its peripherals in new colors without forcing you to buy an iMac?
