For many years, Apple has had one goal with its products: to reduce the thickness as much as possible. All products go through it, whether MacBook Air and Pro, iPads or even iPhones. If progress has been timid on the latest generations of iPhone, the iPhone 17 should reach a new record in thinness, Apple would have found the solution to offer thinner OLED screens, which will obviously affect the overall thickness of the iPhone 17.

Thinner iPhones, one of the improvements of the next iPhone range

Apple could be on the verge of once again revolutionizing the design of its iPhones thanks to new OLED screen technology. Taiwanese company Novatek recently announced that it will begin mass production of OLED displays incorporating TDDI technology (Touch and Display Driver Integration) from the second quarter of 2025. This technological advance could well be a game-changer for future iPhones, particularly the iPhone 17.

According to a report from DigiTimesalthough it remains at the speculation stage for the moment, Apple could be among Novatek’s first customers. The Cupertino company would be particularly interested in these screens which offer several key advantages, in particular a reduction in thickness.

TDDI technology: a promising advancement

TDDI technology combines the touch controller and display driver into a single chip, eliminating the need for separate components. This integration not only allows for thinner screens, but also improves touch performance and display quality. By reducing the number of components, this innovation simplifies device design while lowering production costs.

The use of TDDI also offers the possibility of reducing the size of the screen borders, which would allow Apple to design lighter devices with even more refined designs. The iPhone 17 could thus become more ergonomic, while maintaining, or even improving, their technical performance.

A schedule that could coincide with the launch of the iPhone 17

Novatek’s planned production schedule for these OLED displays appears to correspond with when Apple may need these new components for its next iPhone line. Although it is not certain whether Apple will adopt these screens for all iPhone 17 models, the brand’s interest in this technology is undeniable.

It remains to be seen whether this technology will be present on all models in the range or only on certain premium models, as has been the case in the past with other Apple innovations.
