While Apple hinted at the Mac mini M4 and MacBook Pro M4 after yesterday’s iMac M4 reveal, Amazon didn’t wait and released information about the upcoming Mac mini, revealing several key features. As expected, this is a brand new model, both more compact and more powerful.
A racing beast
According to a comparison table seen on the product page of the new iMac on Amazon (but since retired), the future M4 Mac mini would be offered with M4 and M4 Pro chip options (the current one is offered with M2 and M2 Pro chips), with configurations reaching up to a 14-core CPU and a 20-core GPU. But most importantly, the e-commerce giant suggests that the new Mac mini 2024 is ready to support up to 64 GB of RAM, double the current unified memory limit, while still offering storage options up to 8TB. A machine built for gaming, 3D design, video editing, development and more.
For comparison, the Mac mini M2 Pro can be configured with a 12-core CPU, 19-core GPU, and 32GB of RAM. We also wonder what the gap will be between the M2 Pro and the M4 Pro, this variant having not yet been tested by anyone.
Here is the comparative table that we could consult on the iMac page (and which will certainly return in the coming hours):
A new design
If the technical part is a good surprise, the miniature of the Mac mini M4 also suggests the presence of two USB-C ports on the front in the style of the Mac Studio, which could be Thunderbolt 4 ports. We can also distinguish what seems be a headphone jack on the right side on the front, although the image is too small and blurry to confirm.
Compared to its big brother, the Mac Studio, the new Mac mini seems significantly more compact than the current model, in line with rumors bringing it closer to the size of an Apple TV. The style remains, but the device is much less bulky, which is always a good thing.
As for the colors, we are apparently sticking with the classic gray model, no Space Black version for example.
Release date
Apple is expected to officially announce the new Mac mini this afternoon or Wednesday. The other expected announcement is that of the M4 MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. Fingers crossed for a price drop, like on the 2024 iMac.
