Since 2021, a persistent rumor claims that Amazon is working on an adaptation of the Mass Effect video game saga into a series. According to information from Varietydevelopment of this production is officially launched for broadcast on Prime Video.
What we know about the Mass Effect series
The specialized media specifies that it is Daniel Casey who will write and produce this project. The latter is not necessarily very well known, but he worked on the screenplay for the film Fast & Furious 9.
At his side, we will find Karim Zreik who will serve as executive producer under the banner of Cedar Tree Productions. His credentials are a bit stronger, as he previously worked at the now-defunct Marvel Television unit. He notably worked on the series on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke CageAnd The Punisher.
No element of the plot has filtered out and you will therefore have to be patient. Remember that Mass Effect follows the story of Commander Shepard, a human soldier from the 22nd century who tries to save humanity from a race of aliens, the Reapers.
A project criticized
One big question remains: is it relevant to adapt this franchise into a series? As the first rumors emerged, one of the former screenwriters of the Bioware studio, David Gaider, expressed his skepticism about the project.
He believed that the charm of this title was based on the freedom offered to gamers, an interest which will in fact be eliminated in the series. He added:
First, Mass Effect and Dragon Age have a customizable protagonist. Which means that the series will have to choose whether this protagonist is male or female. And boom, from the start, you have just alienated an entire part of the community who had placed their expectations in the project. Second, these protagonists are designed to be a sort of whiteboard, which the player fills in with their decisions. This won’t work for passive media. Suddenly, the protagonist will have his own personality… and his own ‘story’. It will be weird.
As our colleagues at Geek Journalsimilar criticisms had been leveled at the series Fallout. Ultimately, the creation of Amazon Prime Video was quite good, so we should perhaps keep hope for this adaptation of Mass Effect.
