Mozi, a new social network created by the co-founder of Twitter, is launching on iOS. Unlike X, Bluesky, Threads and company, it focuses solely on real-life user interaction. The idea being to find something social, which has been greatly lost in recent years with “social” networks.

Potential or future flop?

Mozi is a new social network designed to encourage in-person meetings rather than content consumption. Created by Ev Williams, co-founder of Twitter, Mozi focuses on connecting users while they are in the same place, without posts or photos. Mozi works by connecting users only when they are physically close.

Unlike traditional social networks, there are no news feeds, photos or videos. The app is designed to encourage real personal interactions, focusing on privacy and simplicity. It aims to make social media more social, while minimizing digital distractions. An operation that is reminiscent of the Happn dating application.

The privacy-focused app exclusively shares information between mutual contacts. It is currently available in iOS version with a limited launch. Like so many other proposals before, Mozi will have to create a loyal user base otherwise it will quickly find itself invisible on the App Store.

Statement from Ev Willimas:

Social media became “social media,” which in the early days meant receiving content from people you chose to hear from.

But in the quest to maximize engagement, the timeline of friends and people you choose to follow has turned into a free-for-all battle for attention.

And it turns out, for most people, your friends aren’t as entertaining as influencers who spend their waking hours creating “content”.

In other words, social media has become… media.
