Parisian public transport is beginning a real fare revolution at the start of 2025. The historic system of zones is giving way to a new simplified grid, accompanied by increased digitalization of transport tickets. Here are all the details of this reform which impacts both occasional users and subscribers.

A major simplification of prices

The big news for 2025 is the introduction of a single price for travel throughout Île-de-France, regardless of the distance traveled. Two types of tickets are now offered:

  • The metro-train-RER ticket at €2.50 (valid for 2 hours)
  • The bus-tram ticket for €2 (valid for 1h30)

This standardization puts an end to the complexity of the old system based on 5 tariff zones. A change which benefits long-distance journeys but which results in an increase for short journeys, particularly within Paris where the ticket was previously €2.15.

Airport connections also adopt a single price of €13, compared to variable prices between €10.30 and €16.60 previously. A welcome simplification for tourists, even if this price remains high.

Dematerialization is accelerating

This reform is accompanied by a modernization of the supports, with the planned disappearance of the cardboard ticket by the end of 2025. Travelers will now have to opt for:

  • The rechargeable Navigo Easy Pass (in plastic)
  • Dematerialization on smartphones via the Maps application for iPhone/Apple Watch users
  • The RATP application for other devices

Apple also offers extensive integration with its ecosystem, even allowing you to use your transport ticket when the battery is exhausted thanks to a dedicated energy reserve. A definite advantage for users of the Apple brand.

Increases for subscribers

Navigo Pass holders are not spared from the increases. The monthly plan increases to €88.80 (+2.8%), while the annual subscription increases to €976.80. Students see their Imagine’R card increase to €384.30.

The only truly advantageous offer remains the Pass Liberté+, billed at €1.99 per metro/RER journey and €1.60 by bus/tram. This no-obligation formula allows you to pay only for journeys actually made, with a direct debit the following month. However, you must live in Ile-de-France to take advantage of this offer which is not compatible with Maps on iPhone (but that should happen soon).

This reform marks an important turning point in the pricing policy of Ile-de-France transport, favoring simplicity of use and digitalization, but at the cost of a general increase in prices which should continue until 2031 according to the protocol signed between IDFM and the ‘State.
