With the deployment of optical fiber throughout the country, we had to expect, inevitably, a downside. But for several months, breakdowns, wild connections and other bugs have been ruining the lives of users. The problem is so important that it is now local communities who pass information on to the highest levels of power.
Reduce the number of breakdowns
In order to combat these inconveniences, Arcep, the organization in charge of fiber deployment (among others), has set up an observatory. Launched in July 2023, it has just released new conclusions. In this 4th report, the observatory is delighted to see “an improvement in results” in a “large part of the territory”. The working group nevertheless warns that these results must now be “confirmed” over time.
In this report, which focuses mainly on the rate of breakdowns by installations, we learn that it is the northern regions of France which suffer the most. The operator Sequantic Telecom, which operates in Ile de France, is the worst performer in this ranking (1.87 points). In contrast, Orange 13 (in Bouches du Rhône) is also a big winner with a breakdown rate estimated at 0.16 points by Arcep.
Which region has the best internet connection?
If outages are more frequent in the north of the country and in Île-de-France, it is also in these regions that the deployment of optical fiber is most advanced. For the moment, the Arcep site has 16 departments that are slightly behind schedule. You can find them on the map above.
All other territories are more than 80% covered. Still on the Arcep website, when we look this time at who has the best internet connection, we discover a slightly different map. Quite logically, it is the large metropolises and their departments which have the right to the best connection.

The few departments lagging behind are often located in rural, mountainous or isolated areas. This is particularly the case for Haute-Savoie which is found both on the map of the least well served departments and on the map of the weakest connections. Ardèche and Drome are in the same situation.
You can check your ideal internet connection (on paper) with the Arcep website, available here. You can also compare these figures with instant results obtained on specialized sites like speedtest.net.
