Passkeys, or access keys, are experiencing growing adoption with more than 200 companies having now integrated this technology. A major development in digital security which also affects the Apple ecosystem, a pioneer in this field with its native integration since iOS 16.
Mass adoption by large companies
According to data shared by 1Password, the number of companies having adopted passkeys has doubled in one year. Among them, we find giants like Walmart, Amazon, X, PlayStation and Discord. This technology, developed by the FIDO Alliance in partnership with Apple, Google and Microsoft, makes it possible to replace traditional passwords with biometric authentication or a security key.
The statistics revealed by 1Password speak for themselves: more than 4.2 million passkeys have already been registered in their service, with an average of 2.1 million monthly authentications. One in three 1Password users has at least one passkey, and 73% of users are individuals. Adoption accelerates particularly during major integration announcements, as was the case with X (formerly Twitter) which generated nearly 90,000 new passwords in one week.
On iOS, the functionality is particularly well integrated. Available in Safari since iOS 16, it expanded to third-party applications with iOS 17, demonstrating Apple’s commitment to this transition to a password-free future. The FIDO Alliance recently announced new specifications enabling easy import and export of keys between different password managers, further strengthening the interoperability of this technology.
