Imagine this situation. You pay the tidy sum of 13 euros per month for your YouTube Premium subscription. The idea being to support content creators and avoid advertisements on the platform. Except that you still see advertisements appearing during your streaming sessions. This is the unpleasant surprise that customers of Google’s service reported on Reddit.
A very annoying bug
On the social network, an Internet user asked:
I started seeing these “sponsored” videos at the top of the screen. They look like some sort of advertisement – and this with a premium account. Is this new?
Another user reports having seen ads related to YouTube Playables, the games offering offered by the portal. Based on the platform’s rules, YouTube Premium subscribers should theoretically not see these ads before or during videos, while third-party banners or ads do not normally appear in search results.
So what’s going on? A YouTube spokesperson did not fail to react to this unpleasant situation, emphasizing in this regard:
YouTube Premium subscribers should not see ads in their main feed, and we’re investigating why this may have happened. We have also informed the affected user that they should contact support.
Except that this is not the first time that this type of bug has happened to YouTube Premium customers. As our colleagues at 01Netseveral subscribers have already reported the presence of advertising. The service clearly indicates that promotional elements integrated by videographers or sponsored links may appear, but these do not fall into the situations described above.
YouTube at war with ad blockers
We will therefore have to be patient and give the entertainment giant time to resolve this problem. As a reminder, the platform has launched an unprecedented offensive to overcome ad blockers. Last November, a YouTube spokesperson clearly announced the color:
Using ad blockers violates YouTube’s terms of service. We’ve launched a global effort to encourage viewers with ad blockers to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience. Ads support a diverse ecosystem of creators around the world and connect billions to their favorite content on YouTube.
