If you have an unused PSP or one with a broken screen, you probably don’t know that you can turn it into a mini PS2, complete with Bluetooth controller capabilities to play PSP games on your TV. This is exactly what the “PS Placeable” mod from Retro Mod Workstransforming your handheld console into a living room experience.
A mini PS2!
The “PS Placeable” module retails for $274.99 (cough!), but is currently on a waiting list due to overwhelming demand. The website notes that it is essentially the work of one person, which explains the anticipation following its unexpected popularity.
For those with some technical know-how, Retro Mod Works also lets you send in your own PSP for modification at a reduced cost of $174.99, or you can opt for a more “DIY” approach. by pre-ordering parts to do the conversion yourself. This mod is only compatible with the PSP-2000 or PSP-3000 models since the very first PSP lacked video output capabilities. It remains unclear when DIY parts will be available, but information will be made available to customers soon.
Dan, the initiator of the project, shared with the host of the YouTube channel Macho Nacho ProductionsTito Perez, his disdain for repurchasing games digitally when he already owns physical copies, leading his initiative to add Bluetooth support while retaining UMD functionality. He also expressed Reddit its goal is to bring damaged PSPs back to life, as the mod does not require a working screen.
The alternative: the PSP Go
However, these mod kits are expensive or require skills that many may not possess. If your main interest is playing PSP games on a larger screen without the need for a UMD drive, the PSP Go (see on Amazon) could be an alternative. It lacks the UMD player but supports Bluetooth controllers and video output, making it a viable and more accessible option for retro gaming enthusiasts.
Otherwise, if you have an iPhone or iPad, remember that the PPSSPP emulator is free and is very well designed!
