Information about Samsung’s upcoming folding smartphone models is slowly appearing in Korean media. Samsung would have chosen a radically different approach from that of Huawei for its tri-folding smartphone. The Korean manufacturer is developing a “G” folding mechanism, where the two side parts of the screen fold inwards. This configuration guarantees optimal protection of the foldable panel, unlike the “Z” design of the Mate XT which exposes part of the screen to the outside.
This technical decision is not trivial. It directly responds to feedback from Mate XT users, who reported durability issues with the external display. Samsung Display, the group’s screen division, has been working on this technology for several years. The concept was also presented at CES 2022 under the name “Flex G”, demonstrating the progressive maturity of this innovation.
Impressive technical characteristics
Samsung’s future tri-folding smartphone promises a unique user experience with a 12.4-inch screen when fully unfolded. This impressive diagonal positions it halfway between a traditional smartphone and a compact tablet. In a partially unfolded configuration, the device will offer a display surface of 10.5 inches, allowing unprecedented versatility of use.
Unlike the current Galaxy Z Fold, this new model would not have a camera under the screen. Samsung seems to prioritize image quality for selfies, probably with a classic cutout in the screen. This decision reflects a trade-off between innovation and practicality, as under-screen camera technology is not yet fully mature.
An exclusive production strategy
Samsung is taking a cautious approach to the launch of this innovative smartphone. Production would be limited to less than 300,000 units, suggesting premium positioning and limited availability. This strategy is reminiscent of the recent launch of the Galaxy Z Fold SE, which did not benefit from global distribution.
The price has not yet been officially communicated, but it should be at the high end of the market. For comparison, the Huawei Mate XT is sold for around 3,000 euros, the equivalent of three iPhone 16s. On the parallel market, some resellers even offer the device for 10,000 euros, illustrating the enthusiasm for this cutting-edge technology.
Interest in tri-folding smartphones is real. Huawei has recorded thousands of pre-orders for its Mate XT, even though actual sales are between 100,000 and 200,000 units. These figures are explained by production constraints and the high price, but demonstrate the existence of a market for these ultra-premium devices.
