Meta is reportedly developing its own search engine powered by artificial intelligence (AI). A way to no longer depend on its competitors, Google and Microsoft.

Meta AI should become a search engine

Meta crawlers, or “ web crawlers » in English, have been in action for months. These bots automatically scan the web in a methodical and automated manner to find information. According to the very well informed The Information, they will provide answers to Meta AI usersthe conversational agent from Mark Zuckerberg’s firm, deployed in web version and in WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger (apart from Europe).

Currently, AI is based on Google Search and Microsoft Bing to respond to Internet users’ queries. By no longer relying on the two most popular search engines in the world, Meta would further accelerate the profound change that is currently affecting the sector, increasingly threatening the previously uncontested monopoly of the Mountain View firm.

Because AI has completely redistributed the cards. If the giants also rely on technology to optimize their products, like the gradual integration of Gemini into Search, Newcomers Deliver Fully AI-Powered, Innovative User Experiences.

Perplexity, whose popularity continues to grow, is the perfect example. For its part, OpenAI is also working on an in-house search engine called SearchGPT: it will be entirely AI-powered.

A key agreement with Reuters

On the other hand, these types of products raise important copyright questions because AIs generate information directly from media. Just last week, Perplexity AI was the subject of legal action by News Corp, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal. The startup is also threatened by other publishers, including New York Times.

OpenAI has also been targeted by complaints from several news outlets for training its models on their content. But Meta, for his part, seems to have found the perfect solution. Last week, the company announced it had reached a multi-year agreement with the Reuters news agency. Objective: allow Meta AI to use its articles in its answers.

Moreover, this agreement only confirms the information according to which Meta is indeed considering converting its conversational agent into a search engine. Unlike its rivals, Meta AI reaches colossal number of users as it is directly deployed in the social media giant’s flagship applications. Google had better watch out.

  • Meta is reportedly working on an in-house search engine.
  • The idea is to convert its Meta AI conversational agent into a search engine, capable of finding the answers itself on the Internet.
  • This would allow it to no longer depend on Google and Microsoft.
