Meta’s augmented reality and virtual reality headsets have apparently been very popular this year at Christmas. Indeed, the App Store number position of the Meta Horizon application in the United States is not misleading. It goes without saying that the Meta Quest 3S, sold for $299 (and €329 here), is a fantastic deal compared to Apple’s Vision Pro. A nice “geek” gift, but one that will have to convince over time.
Meta Horizon tops the rankings
If you check the rankings of the American App Store on December 26, you will see that the Meta Horizon app, which allows you to manage your mixed reality headset, occupies first place. In France, it is 100th, which is not bad either.
Among the other big Christmas winners, we can deduce from the ranking the meteoric rise of Amazon Alexa, which reflects sales of Echo speakers, MyDyson which accompanies the brand’s vacuum cleaners, Nintendo Switch parental control for the portable console, PlayStation App for the PS5 or even Bose, JBL and Sony for headphones and speakers.
At the same time, AirPods and Apple Watch are the most common Apple gifts, although their popularity cannot be measured by App Store trends, because AirPods do not have a dedicated app and l The Apple Watch app is pre-installed and therefore not rated.
As for Apple’s Vision Pro, the figures are still being kept secret, but with a starting price of $3,499 (€3,999), there is little chance that it will have found itself under the majority of trees. With its affordable price, the Meta Quest 3S is a more family-friendly option. It remains to be seen whether the fun will continue over time.
For the record, in order to convince a wider audience, Apple is reportedly considering a collaboration with Sony to integrate support for PS VR controllers into its Vision Pro, with the aim of strengthening the appeal of visionOS for virtual reality games.
