Inside the Gmail inbox, we can experience real chaos when we’re faced with thousands of received messages. It’s not difficult to reach that number. It only takes a few months to abandon your inbox to find such an unpleasant surprise. And to top it all off, the current search function in Gmail itself could be significantly improved.
But it looks like all that’s about to change soon. The tech giant Google has announced an improvement to this very aspect of Gmail, which aims to improve the search for different emails received. This update will be released for both the mobile and PC versions of Gmail, so it covers virtually all versions. From now on, any user of this email service will be able to choose to sort emails based on relevance or date (currently, it was only by date).
Gmail’s new search system
When we say “by relevance,” we’re referring to three different aspects: frequent contacts, the emails we’ve interacted with the most, and the arrival date of the email in question. According to Google itself, the likelihood of the result you’re looking for appearing is much higher now, due to the combination of these three factors. This, in theory, will save us “valuable time” when searching for the information we want. All of this is reported on Google’s own blog.

And yet, even though the changes are coming soon, they aren’t irreversible. That is, if we’re not happy with this new search format, we can always disable it. In any case, if you don’t quite get the hang of this new format when it arrives and want to fully control your Gmail service, you can always find a series of shortcuts to use when searching for emails:
To search for emails sent by a specific person or institution, you can always type “from:[email protected]” where the example is that specific user.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for emails that you have sent to a person, you can type “to:[email protected]”
You can also use if you are searching for specific words within an email: “Subject: keyword”
And finally, if you’re looking for emails received within a date range, because you think the information is within a specific period, you can use “after: date / before :date”
Other Gmail improvements
However, this isn’t the only move Google has made to improve its email service. In addition to the improvements coming to search for specific emails, other improvements have also been made to the list. In this case, we’re talking about new package tracking with a feature it calls “summary card.”
And, as it could not be otherwise, Google’s AI, Gemini, also makes an appearance and will be dedicated to helping us write emails and other tasks with other applications created by Google itself.
