Signal, the privacy-focused messaging app, is rolling out a big update to its video calling features. These new features clearly position the application as a serious alternative to Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, while retaining its DNA centered on the protection of privacy.
A new tab dedicated to calls
The main new feature is the addition of a “Calls” tab which centralizes all the features related to audio and video communications. Users can now create and manage call links, view their history and start new conversations directly from this dedicated interface. These links are reusable, which is particularly practical for recurring meetings, like what professional solutions offer.
Modern and secure features
Signal also enriches the user experience with several expected features:
- A “raise your hand” system to ask to speak
- Emoji reactions during calls
- Different views possible on computer (grid, sidebar, focus on the speaker)
- The ability to name calls
- Moderation options (manual authorization, exclusion, blocking)
The app supports up to 50 participants in a group call, a figure that puts it above WhatsApp (32 participants) but below professional solutions. Please note that all these communications remain end-to-end encrypted, in accordance with Signal’s philosophy.

For Apple users, this update represents an interesting alternative to FaceTime, especially for mixed conversations with Android and Windows users. The update is available on iOS, Android and desktop apps.
Signal specifies that it uses its solution itself for its internal meetings, thus demonstrating its confidence in the robustness of its system. This development is part of the post-COVID trend where video calls have become a standard mode of communication, whether in a professional or personal setting.
