Launched in April 2021, the AirTag is already more than 3 years old. And currently, rumors are circulating about the new version of Apple’s object tracker, which could arrive next week. In his latest newsletter, Mark Gurman, journalist at Bloomberg, assures that the AirTag 2, codenamed B589, should be released in mid-2025. Apple is already testing the production of this new accessory.
Gurman also talks about the design of the AirTag 2, which should be similar to the first version. Thus, we would not have a new format or a bank card-shaped tag for wallets. On the other hand, the firm would focus on improving the characteristics. Specifically, the AirTag 2 would have better range, a new chip, and improved privacy protection.
For example, Apple would make it more difficult to remove the AirTag’s built-in speaker. And this development is important, since this speaker alerts people when they are being spied on with an AirTag. This new AirTag would be part of a series of new products planned for 2025, including the iPhone SE 2025, as well as a connected screen such as the Amazon Echo Show or Google Nest Hub.
AirTag: an increasingly essential product
This rumor about the new version of the AirTag is circulating as Apple has just announced an important new feature for the AirTag and for other Bluetooth trackers compatible with its Locate network.
As a reminder, when lost, AirTags and other compatible trackers emit a Bluetooth signal which is picked up by Apple products (for example, the iPhone of a person passing by). Then, the location of the place where the signal was picked up is transmitted securely to the owner of the lost object, via the Locate application.
And recently, Apple announced an update that will allow owners of AirTags or compatible trackers to share the location of their lost items with a third party, via a link. Additionally, Apple is working with several airlines so that this location sharing can be integrated into customer services. Therefore, in the event of lost luggage, companies working with Apple will be able to rely on the Locate network to help their customers.
