Apple presented the new iPad mini 7 a few days ago, and one of its main competitors, Amazon, has announced the new Kindle Colorsoft, the company’s first reading device that includes a color screen.

This new Amazon Kindle model is set to be direct competition for Apple’s iPad, thanks to its innovative color technology, which promises a reading experience closer to real paper. The Kindle Colorsoft hits the market for 299 euros and seeks to change the rules of the game in the world of e-readers, which have traditionally been devices with black and white screens.

New Kindle with color screen

The Kindle Colorsoft, which will be available starting October 30is distinguished by its 7-inch screen, designed with high-resolution technology that offers a color reading experience without sacrificing quality or response speed when turning pages. Amazon has used a combination of LED pixels and a new backlight system to achieve vibrant colors, but without the latency problems usually associated with color e-ink displays. This combination allows for a fluid experience and, according to Amazon, a feeling “paper-like”differentiating it from traditional tablets, which use LCD screens.

Although Amazon takes the crown of this technological segment with this novelty, it is not the only company interested in electronic color display technology. Apple has shown increasing interest in EPD (Electronic Paper Display) technology, which includes the possibility of color displays.

Already in 2022, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple had carried out tests with this type of screens for future folding devices, such as the iPhone or iPad. However, Apple has not yet launched any products with this technology, which leaves the door open for Amazon to position itself as a pioneer in this field.

The iPad mini 7 already has a rival

This competition between Amazon and Apple could intensify in the coming months, especially if Apple decides to implement color E Ink displays in its future devices. Although the iPad remains the benchmark in terms of versatility and multimedia features, the Kindle Colorsoft focuses on a specific niche: users who value the reading experience over other functionalities, but who are now also looking to enjoy color content without compromising the visual comfort.

The iPad stands out for its versatility in various sectors, such as education, but with the arrival of the Kindle Colorsoft, Amazon offers a more affordable alternative for those who prioritize color reading without the fatigue that LCD screens cause to their eyes. This could appeal to students and regular readers, although those who prefer a richer multimedia experience will still choose the iPad.

Amazon has also introduced the new Kindle Scribe, with a paper-like texture screen and a digital pen that includes an erase function. With a price of 400 euros, it is ideal for advanced writing. Additionally, the latest version of the Kindle Paperwhite offers 25% faster page turning speed.
