The Xbox app will soon allow users to purchase and play games directly from an iPhone, iPad or Android, according to an announcement from Xbox President Sarah Bond on X. This expected development is made possible thanks to Recent changes to Google’s platform earlier this week, allowing Microsoft to expand its offerings on mobile platforms. Apple had already relaxed its rules, at least in Europe, since iOS 17.4.
Xbox will move up a gear
This upcoming integration will give Xbox users access to even more features and games, although it’s not yet entirely clear how this update will interact with the Microsoft Mobile Storerecently announced and highly anticipated. This raises questions about how the new features of the Xbox mobile app will fit into Microsoft’s plans for its own mobile store, especially since the company has been working on this platform well before the changes to the Google store . Moreover, Google, beaten in court by Epic Games, is only required to make these changes on its platform for three years, compared to six initially planned, which leaves little time for Microsoft to act.
An alternative store on iOS and Android
Launching a functional store on mobile devices is more complex than it seems. Although the potential is enormous, Microsoft has encountered difficulties, notably due to significant layoffs which have affected the development teams. These obstacles delayed the planned July launch of the Microsoft Games Store for mobile, but the new capabilities of the Xbox mobile app are a clear sign that everything is on track.
The court’s ruling to open up Google´s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility. Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices so we are excited to share that starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly…

Despite the delays and challenges, it’s clear that Microsoft is committed to expanding its presence on mobile platforms. With the ability to purchase and play games directly through the app, Xbox gamers will soon have the opportunity to enhance the overall experience, even while away from home. Remember that Microsoft recently announced that it would unify the Xbox and Game Pass apps.
