The dosdude1 channel has been the first to show us the process, which although it can be done by yourself, without paying more for a larger storagewill have a series of steps that not all of us will know or be able to carry out, since we would not even have the tools.
Change Mac Mini M4 SSD, possible?
The youtuber we talked about would have shown us that yes, it is possible, and we can do it for much less money than Apple asks us for a model with an extra 256 GB, or more, since the cost is higher than that of the SSD independently, posted later by us.
The steps you have taken to do this, however, are not entirely comfortable, being the following:
- Remove the original NAND storage chips from the board with a heat gun
- Prepare the new NAND chips by repackaging them
- Solder the new NAND chips to the board
- Restore Mac mini in DFU mode.
For an expert user accustomed to this type of process, it may not be very complicated, however, any common user does not even have a heat gun at home, nor a soldering iron, so we would look for the option of being able to expand it more simple, and this process is not for everyone, having to go to a professional for itwhich added to the cost of new storage, would not offset the expense, and would only be profitable if we do it ourselves.
In summary, if we are going to purchase a Mac Mini M4, which is very well priced, we must be clear about the type of storage need we will have, and buy the appropriate one directly, although we will always have a second option External SSD or use iCloudvery interesting measures if we want to save money and do not need, natively, for the Mac Mini to have so much available space.
The 256 GB expansion currently costs 230 euros, which will be proportional if we continue looking for more up to 2 TB with a total cost of 920 euros, added to the price of the Mac Mini itself, something that, personally, seems like an abuse to me, since the SSDs are very cheap todayand since we cannot replace it as if it were an SD card, they try to make us pay directly for it.
And you, are you one of those who looks for a complete device, despite paying more? Or, on the contrary, do you prefer to purchase the base model and look for future alternatives to improve its storage, if necessary? Leave us a comment with your opinion, and if you think that in the coming years, the EU will force Apple to give us the facilities to change it on our own, as we will see with batteries in 2027. Everything indicates that yes, but for now only We have these options, so if you don’t know or don’t want to risk it, you better think about its capacity before buying it.
