The latest major version of the iPhone software, iOS 18, which arrived in September with big changes and new features, now allows us to change the way we take notes on our Apple devices, since we can record audio directly and generate a written transcription automatically within a note.

This tool is ideal for students, any worker, and anyone who needs to retain information from meetings, classes, or conferences in greater detail.

How to record audios and transcriptions on iPhone

In previous versions of iOS, recording audio and adding it to a note required several steps: users had to use the Voice Memos app, make the recording, and then manually attach it in Notes. With iOS 18, this entire process is done directly from the Notes app.

Additionally, if you have an iPhone 12 or later, this feature includes the option to automatically transcribe recorded audio. This is especially useful for reviewing meetings, analyzing presentations and seminars, or summarizing key points from a session of any type. Although transcription is limited to various variants of English (such as British, American, Australian or South African), Apple is expected to expand support to more languages in future updates.

Record audio in Notes

To record audio in Notes, you just need to open a new note and tap the “+” button that appears at the bottom right of the screen. Among the available tools, you will find the “Record Audio” option. Selecting it will open an interface similar to that of the Voice Memos app.

With a simple tap on the red record button, you can start capturing sound. Also, if you activate the button with a speech bubble next to the record button, you will get a real time transcription. When finished, you can add the recording and its transcription directly to your note, or copy and paste it into other programs such as word processors or blogs.

Apple Intelligence goes one step further

Users with more advanced devices, such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or iPads with A17 Pro or M1 chips, can take advantage of Apple Intelligence tools. This feature allows you to summarize transcripts, correct errors, and rewrite parts of text in a different style directly from the Notes app.

For example, if you record a class or a long meeting, Apple Intelligence can help you generate a concise summary, highlight pending tasks, or rewrite key passages to share with your classmates or work team.

This feature is not limited to the iPhone. It is also available on any iPad with iPadOS 18 or later and on Macs with M1 or newer processors, running macOS Sequoia. This ensures that you can work with your notes and recordings across the entire Apple ecosystem, ensuring a seamless and connected experience across all your devices.

While we wait for Apple to expand compatibility with more languages and arrive in Spain definitively, which it seems will do in April, it is clear that this function already marks a before and after in the way we organize and process information.
