Since platforms like OnlyFans, Patreon and Mym have become successful, traditional social networks seem to have understood the importance of exclusive content in exchange for a monthly subscription. After Instagram and X who got involved, it is TikTok’s turn to offer its content creators paid subscriptions. This is beneficial for creators, because they earn additional income, but also for TikTok, which will receive a commission on each subscription.

TikTok and subscriptions, it starts now in France

TikTok is taking another step forward by offering content creators an additional opportunity to monetize their audience with the official launch of paid subscriptions. Now available in France, as well as several other countries, this new feature is an important step forward in the platform’s strategy to diversify its revenue streams.

The rollout of paid subscriptions is global, as in addition to France, subscriptions are now available in Brazil, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and the United States. TikTok plans to expand this feature to other markets in the coming weeks, but the company wants to do things gradually.

Eligibility criteria

To take advantage of this opportunity, content creators must meet certain conditions. Here are the criteria to be eligible:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a minimum of 10,000 subscribers.
  • Have recorded 100,000 video views in the last calendar month.
  • Be in compliance with the platform rules.

These criteria are intended to ensure that creators with a valuable audience base can take advantage of the feature and ensure that the content submitted remains compliant with TikTok’s usage guidelines.

A response to platforms specializing in exclusive content

TikTok’s subscription offering is reminiscent of models in place on other platforms like Mym or OnlyFans, but with one important limitation: content must comply with TikTok’s general terms of use, which excludes any form of pornography. This approach allows the platform to stand out by offering a stricter framework while offering exclusive benefits to its subscribers.

Three subscription levels for personalized content

With TikTok’s paid subscriptions, creators have the option to offer three tiers of membership, each with distinct benefits. They have the freedom to set and change the prices of these subscriptions as they see fit. However, TikTok makes a point of insisting on transparency: creators must inform their subscribers precisely what benefits they will have access to once they sign up for each tier.

TikTok explains that subscribers will be able to enjoy exclusive content such as videos, live broadcasts… In addition, TikTok is introducing an additional communication space, the “Sub Space”, which strengthens the bond between creators and subscribers. Imagine being able to chat privately with content creators like Mr Beats, Inoxtag, Gotaga…

Mission: Encourage users to subscribe

To encourage users to subscribe, TikTok is also introducing features that are visible to everyone, such as unique stickers and badges that appear on profiles and in comments. These visual elements are intended to enhance community and strengthen interaction between creators and their fans. For some users, showing their support through these badges and stickers could be reason enough to sign up for a subscription.
