Steam, like any other app, needs constant updates to function correctly, and, above all, to maintain your safety. That is why, after a while, operating systems with years old, do not meet the Minimum requirements of the new version.
If this happens, and you maintain a macOS that will no longer be, you will remain without being able to open the Steam application, so we are going to see what you would need, and how to update your computer if you do not have them activated by default, and you have never done it, since you could be in those old versions that no longer work with several programs or games.
Steam will stop working in macOS 11
He October 15, 2025 It will be the first day in which Steam does not allow the opening of its program in versions of 11 or lower macOS, forcing the user to update the app if he wants to execute it, something that will also be impossible but also improves the version of the system, since future updates of the client Steam will require security functions and characteristics only present in macOS 12 or superior.
Valve urges users who still use macOS Big Sur to update as soon as possible. Apple stopped issuing security updates for this version in 2023, which leaves the equipment vulnerable to malware, the robberies of credentials and failures in Steam or games, and it is not a thing of this platform, that it wants to bother us, but that it does so to prevent you from having problems that we may not know that we are exposed.
In addition, Steam has already launched a native version for Macs with M-series chipwhich avoids depending on Rosetta 2 and significantly improves the performance, battery life and interaction of the app. This version is available through the Beta program of Steam since June of this year, so if your computer is 2020 or higher, you may have one compatible with this app, leaving aside annoying intermediate steps, so you can update your computer, making a 2 × 1.
On the other hand, Apple has announced that macOS Tahoe (version 26, announced in June 2025) will be the last one that macOS will support with Intel processors. In turn, macOS 27 will stop including Rosetta 2 completely, so these models would be before their last games.
What should you do if you use macOS Big Sur?
- Update your operating system to macOS 12 (Monterey), 13 (Ventura) or more recent versions (Tahoe, Sonoma … according to your hardware compatibility.) Go to settings – General – Software update, and install the most recent that appears available.
- If you have a Mac with an Apple Silicon chip (M1/m2 …), consider trying the beta version of Steam.
You can activate it from the Steam menu at:
Steam – Preferences – Participation in Beta – Steam Beta Update - If your Mac cannot support macOS 12 or later: You can no longer use Steam after October 15, 2025.
