For the Apple Vision Pro, YouTube chose not to offer an official application; the Google subsidiary even made sure to eliminate an alternative that was available on the visionOS App Store. Fortunately, one of YouTube’s main competitors woke up and decided to offer a native solution on the Vision Pro, it’s Vimeo! The company announced the launch of its application on visionOS.
Vimeo arrives on Vision Pro
Vimeo has officially launched a native application for the Apple Vision Pro, the company will highlight its catalog of videos (already very complete) and will rely heavily on one of the assets of the Vision Pro: spatial videos. With this application, users can now view, download and share immersive content. Of course, videos in classic format will also be available in large quantities!
The arrival of this application is excellent news for Apple Vision Pro users, because applications that offer a complete catalog of spatial videos are few in number. What will probably quickly add to Vimeo’s catalog are the videos coming from owners of iPhone 15 Pro and more recent models, they can record spatial videos from the “Camera” application and will be able to publish them directly on Vimeo.
In its press release, Vimeo expresses its ambition to see spatial video become a mainstream format and not just reserved for professional creators. The company is thinking of varied uses in several areas:
- Product presentations: offer consumers an immersive view that simulates proximity to the product.
- Training and education: Companies and schools could use these videos to provide engaging and interactive content to deepen knowledge on a particular topic.
- Entertainment: with a wide variety of content, such as tourist videos, sports videos, hidden cameras…
This Vimeo app built for visionOS puts a clear focus on the future of spatial video. Vimeo also relies on its video catalog to attract as many users as possible. In addition, the online video platform has an advantage: the absence of YouTube, its main competitor.
