Apple today released the first beta version of visionOS 2.2 to developers, and adds the promised “Wide” and “Ultra-wide” modes to the Mac Virtual Display feature. In English, the firm speaks of “Wide” and “Ultrawide”.
Finally an extended display
To refresh the memory of those who do not own Apple’s mixed reality headset, you should know that the Mac Virtual Display allows the Vision Pro to be used as an external screen for a Mac. This feature has been available since the initial release of visionOS, but the broader options are new in the latest beta.
Apple has previously said that the ultrawide version of Mac Virtual Display is equivalent to having two physical 4K displays side by side on a desk.
The Apple Vision Pro’s productivity tools are enriched with new capabilities with visionOS 2. Later this year, the Mac’s virtual screen will have an increased resolution and size to create an ultra-wide-angle display equivalent to two 4K displays side by side. visionOS 2 also supports mice for additional workflow possibilities, and Vision Pro will now surface the user’s physical Magic Keyboard – even if they are immersed in an Environment or app – to create a space for ideal job.
With version 2.2, the Mac Virtual Display is now available in three sizes: Normal, Wide and Ultrawide.
Release date
If you’re not a developer, be aware that visionOS 2.2 will likely be released to the public in December alongside iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2, watchOS 11.2, tvOS 18.2, and other updates.
Apple has not yet offered public beta versions of visionOS.
