Once again, our friend Basic Apple Guy has concocted magnificent wallpapers for us for the latest iPhones, a sort of internal view of the components which always has its effect. For the fourth consecutive year, the designer, who started this project with the iPhone 12 Pro, recreated all the internal components of Apple’s latest phone, this time with more than 4,200 handmade elements. A titanic job!
A work of art
The creation of these wallpapers for the iPhone 16 Pro began in late September, just a week after the device’s release. Based on preliminary teardown videos and photos from Apple’s repair guide, the designer reconstructed each component of the device’s internal layout. Later, detailed photos from iFixit allowed him to further refine the designs with even greater precision. Throughout this process, he strived to faithfully represent each internal component, while taking two stylistic liberties to improve the visual clarity and depth of the wallpaper.
One such stylistic choice, initiated with the iPhone 14 Pro series, was to show the motherboard exposed. Normally, this card is integrated into a set of components, but the designer’s choice allows it to be revealed more clearly in the wallpaper. The second choice concerns the rear camera housing. With Apple’s recent design changes, a metal plate has been added under the glass for easier repairs, which hides the internal parts from the front. To get around this, the artist depicted the internal components as if they were visible from behind the glass, repositioning and flipping the parts to simulate their actual location under the front glass. The result is a stylized camera body, showing the lenses, flash and LiDAR system in stunning detail.
Each component has been illustrated digitally from A to Z in Sketchwith 1,955 pieces for the 16 Pro and 2,328 for the Pro Max, the artist’s most detailed project to date. After organizing the elements, a multi-layered export process in Pixelmator Pro allowed him to add refined shading, colors and textures to parts like the battery, front camera and motherboard. This process eliminated technical issues, such as unwanted color banding on the battery, and gave the designer the ability to apply dynamic color palettes to each wallpaper. Hence the different variants that match the case and/or your tastes.
These creations enhance the design of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Although not very innovative this year, Apple’s phones remain the best in terms of performance and aesthetics.
