You will be aware that Apple’s current Mac range includes the iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Pro models now equipped with the M4 chip, as well as the MacBook Air M3, Mac Studio M2 and Mac Pro M2. For those waiting for an update to these machines, here’s what to expect from the upcoming M4 versions of the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro.
MacBook Air M4
The MacBook Air 2025 will include the base M4 chip, following the introduction of the M3 in March 2024. On the other hand, no major design overhaul. To compensate, Apple has provided 16 GB of RAM for the base model and a 12 MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support to appeal to video tutorial and video creators. Don’t expect Wi-Fi 7, the MBP didn’t have it.
Release planned for early 2025, between January and March.
Mac Studio M4 Max/Ultra
Apple’s top of the range is expected to feature an M4 Max and Ultra variant, skipping the M3 series. No design overhaul either, but Thunderbolt 5 ports, in line with recent updates to other high-end models like the MacBook Pro M4 or the Mac mini M4 Pro.
Release planned after the MacBook Air, with a launch window between March and June 2025.
Mac Pro M4 Ultra
Like its predecessor, the Mac Pro 2025 will be equipped with the high-end M4 chip, named “Hidra” internally and probably labeled “Ultra” or “Extreme”.
It is expected to have up to a 32-core CPU and up to an 80-core GPU and up to 512 GB of RAM! A war machine, without forgetting Thunderbolt 5 ports and Wi-Fi 7.
Release planned for summer 2025.
These updates will allow Apple to deliver consistency across its Mac lineup with the M4 chip, focusing on performance improvements and new features tailored to professional productivity and creative needs.
