The arrival of Tesla’s CyberCab in the automotive world marks a real break with traditional codes. The American manufacturer made the bold choice of completely remove the steering wheel and pedals from your robotaxi. Tesla would have opted for a solution directly inspired by the world of video games.

A gamepad as a backup device

According to information reported by AutoEvolution, the CyberCab can be controlled using a controller similar to that of the Xbox. This unconventional choice was confirmed by internal sources at the Petersen Museum, where the vehicle is currently on display. This revelation follows the release of a video showing the CyberCab maneuvering inside the museum, with a person sitting in the front.

Observers then hypothesized an alternative control system, with the FSD (Full Self-Driving) autonomous driving software probably not being capable of managing navigation in an interior space as complex as a museum.

The controller connects directly to the vehicle and allows you to control steering and acceleration. Even more surprising, the CyberCab can also be controlled remotely, transforming this futuristic vehicle into a kind of life-size remote-controlled car.

This feature could be particularly useful in certain specific situations, such as parking in tight spaces or navigating complex environments.

A system that is part of Tesla’s robotaxi strategy

This technical solution is not just a gadget, it is part of Tesla’s broader strategy regarding the deployment of its robotaxis fleet. The manufacturer is currently recruiting teleoperators whose mission will be to intervene remotely if necessary.

These professionals will act as safety operators when the manufacturer launches its first commercial fleet, probably before 2027.

The role of these teleoperators will be crucial. Like Waymo already does, they will be able to take remote control of vehicles when they encounter complex or ambiguous situations.

For example, they will be able to guide the vehicle in the event of road works or in unusual traffic configurations that artificial intelligence would not be able to manage optimally.

Regulatory and practical challenges to overcome

The use of a controller as a control device nevertheless raises many questions, particularly on a regulatory level. Current safety standards for motor vehicles will have to evolve to allow the marketing of a vehicle controlled by this type of device.

Tesla will also have to clarify how individual owners will be able to manage their vehicle if necessary: ​​will they have their own controller? How will emergency situations be managed?

The manufacturer must also resolve numerous practical aspects before launching its robotaxis service. Fleet management requires complex organization, including cleaning and maintenance of vehicles.
