Al Pacino’s character was thought of as a drug addict
According to ScreenrantVincent Hanna was addicted to cocaine in an early version of the film’s script. This aspect was subsequently erased, but his addictive behavior sometimes remains visible. Al Pacino explains that this is one of the reasons why this protagonist throws tantrums and recites certain eccentric lines. When he played, the actor imagined his character as is.
Michael Mann almost didn’t direct the film
Michael Mann is a fan of the script Heat since the mid-80s and he dreamed of being able to adapt it for the cinema one day. He notably proposed this project to Walter Hill (The Driver) but the latter did not wish to realize. The filmmaker therefore ended up getting started.
The actors prepared for the shoot with real gangsters and police officers
The specialist site reports that Michael Mann took his cast to a restaurant in Los Angeles where LAPD police officers and renowned criminals often meet. So the actors had dinner one evening with the police and spent another evening with real bandits.
Heat is based on a true story
The character of Vincent Hanna is inspired by Chuck Adamson, a former Chicago police officer. The latter spent a large part of his career tracking down a criminal named Neil McCauley, specifies YardBarker. Moreover, in the script, Rober DeNiro’s character is called the same.
