It’s now been almost five years since a Star Wars film was released in theaters, but things seem to be accelerating on the Lucasfilm side. Our colleagues from Deadline report that Simon Kindberg, known for having produced several X-Men films, is working on a trilogy project. The latter could follow on from episode IX and be available in the form X, XI, XII.
A direct or independent sequel?
He would be responsible for writing and producing these new feature films alongside Kathleen Kennedy, the boss of Lucasfilm. The idea of seeing a new part which would start just after The Rise of Skywalker is not, however, unanimous. According to a source close to the production consulted by io9, this trilogy is only at the very beginning of its development. This could be a new Star Wars saga that moves away from Episode IX.
Especially since another feature film, The New Jedi Ordersupposed to be released in May 2026, has already been teased as is. It will star Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) and it will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
In any case, it is very difficult to sort through the multiple announcements of Star Wars feature film projects that have been made in recent years. Let us recall in particular that James Mangold is working on Dawn of the Jedi. Another initiative headed by Dave Filoni is supposed to conclude the Mandoverse.
Donald Glover is working on a film dedicated to Lando Calrissian, and Taika Waititi regularly teases his project in the universe of the saga. Let’s add to this already long list Rian Johnson, whose trilogy project has not officially been abandoned.
io9 also recalls that other attractive initiatives were aborted, including the film Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins and those signed by Marvel boss Kevin Feige and cinema legend Guillermo Del Toro.
A new Star Wars series in December
As we will have understood, it is still difficult to see clearly the way in which Star Wars will soon be available in the cinema. It’s clearer on the series side, since Skeleton Crew will land on Disney+ on December 3. Here is the synopsis of this production proposed by Lucasfilm:
Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four children who, after a mysterious discovery on their seemingly peaceful planet, find themselves lost in an unknown and dangerous galaxy. While looking for a way home, they will cross paths with Jod Na Nawood.
