With the arrival of iOS 18.1the AirPods have also undergone an update, allowing us to run a tool that, until now, did not exist, and that can help you know the beginning of a hearing problem, ideal to be able to request a real and more precise medical appointment if you start to see this .
This would only reach the AirPods Pro 2, which would also have a function, depending on the degree of loss, that would help us compensate for it, being able to hear through both ears clearly and accurately, so it will not only serve as an informative tool, but also as a kind of “hearing aids.”
Audiometry test with AirPods
To use the new hearing health features, you must connect your AirPods Pro 2 to an iPhone running iOS 18.1 or an iPad running iPadOS 18.1. From there, if you tap the AirPods Pro section, you’ll see an option to make a hearing testsomething that did not exist until now.
The test lasts approximately five minutes, starting first with the left ear and then moving to the right ear. You’ll hear a series of tones at different frequencies and sound levels, and the idea is to tap the iPhone screen every time you hear a sound. The tones you hear test four frequencies, including 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz and 4kHz.
For the results to be accurate, the same is recommended as in a real test at the doctor, that is, that there are no noises around you, that you have not just left a concert, nor that you have them filled with wax, or blocked by a flu, for example, something logical.
Once the test is determined, you will get a result with your loss levelwhich can range from 5 dBHL, something very normal, to more than 25 dBHL, which would already imply a significant loss, which the AirPods themselves will warn you about and ask you if you want to adjust these so that your hearing, at least with them positions, be better.
The hearing loss could be even greater, with 25 dB being standard, so if the AirPods suggest anything higher, you should go to the doctor, since you may have a wax plug, or something more important that requires treatment.
As we said, it is only available in this version of AirPods, although it is obviously expected to be released for subsequent ones, in the future, with improvements in this aspect. Apple always tries to incorporate tools that help Health, and until now, with the AirPods, we had not seen anything, we had not even considered the option, but, at least for my part, I find it very interesting.
And you, how do you see these types of improvements, in the form of software, that Apple includes in its devices in a surprise way? The truth is that everything that has to do with health is appreciated, and in this case it can help many to balance the sound of their iPhone and enjoy, even better, the quality of the AirPods, as well as use these as “headphones”something we buy for, but we never know when they might come in handy.
