Free has found a way to celebrate its 25th anniversary in the spotlight with the launch of a new limited edition Freebox Ultra. The latter offers nothing more than existing models, except an eye-catching design. Let’s take stock.

The Freebox Ultra sees red

Free had teased an announcement for December 3 and this transparent version of its high-end box is done. The latter is equipped with a strip of red LEDs. Birthday obliges, the collector’s device indicates “1999-2024” and “25 years”.

The transparency makes it possible to visualize the internal components and in its press release, the operator specifies that it wishes to get closer to the “RGB customizations that can be found on computer towers and peripherals such as keyboards, mice or screens “.

Free adds that it is possible to personalize the lighting ambiance of the box via the Freebox Connect application. Six animation modes are available:

  • Static mode for constant light
  • Breathing mode for a pulsating effect
  • Rain mode for dynamic animation
  • Wave mode for a smooth effect
  • Organic fashion for a natural ambiance
  • Chase mode for sequential scrolling

If this becomes disturbing, the subscriber can also choose to deactivate this light strip with one click from the display of their Freebox or from the Freebox Connect app.

For the rest, nothing changes and this limited edition retains all the performances that made the Freebox Ultra successful. Xavier Niel’s firm quotes as follows: “symmetrical speeds up to 8 Gbit/s (maximum theoretical speeds), the latest generation Wi-Fi 7 technology, and exclusive compatibility with optical fiber”. But the absence of real new features (apart from light) may leave some customers wanting more.

Let us also remember that it is possible to recover this device by opting for two packages: the Freebox Ultra Essentiel at the price of 40 euros per month for the first year then 50 euros thereafter, or the Freebox Ultra (50 euros the first year and 60 euros from the thirteenth month).

Free does not indicate the exact number of copies available of this collector’s edition, but specifies that “Stocks are very limited. » A fairly unsubtle commercial method of pushing you to buy.
