After the Apple Car at the start of the year, we learned today that the Apple Ring would also be abandoned. Another project studied by the brand for a long time, but ultimately deemed not convincing enough to find its place on the market.
A second major abandonment for Apple?
According to Bloomberg and more precisely the very well informed Mark Gurman, Apple has abandoned the Apple Ring project. Despite persistent rumors and a significant number of patents for more than a decade, the connected ring is now forgotten in Cupertino.
Gurman’s main reason is that it could harm the Apple Watch, currently the best-selling watch in the world. Rather than releasing a competitor to the Apple Watch, Apple prefers to focus everything on a single product that combines sport, health and sleep. Not to mention the new features Health AirPods Pro 2 which make this Apple Ring even more useless.
However, it could be interesting in pair work. Coupled with the Apple Watch, it would provide increased precision in heart rate measurement. This is precisely what Oura’s Ring 4, launched a few days ago, does. Coupled with the Vision Pro, it would allow more advanced gesture control than ever.
This announcement not being official information, the project could resurface within a few years although it seems to be off to a bad start. This is reminiscent of the Apple Car project that we heard about for many years, and which was finally abandoned last February.
