While its competitors, like Samsung, Xiaomi or Google, already offer folding smartphones, Apple is content to offer iPhones in the classic format. However, for a while now, it has been rumored that the technology is already being studied within the Cupertino company. And according to a recent rumor, Apple has taken another step towards producing the first foldable iPhone.

In a recent article, the TechRadar site relays a publication by blogger “yeux1122”, a source which is regularly relayed by the media, on the Korean platform Naver. According to this source, Apple has started the “official development process” of its folding iPhone. This seems to suggest that after exploring the technology, the firm is now determined to enter the folding smartphone market and that it has a clearer idea of the type of product it wants to offer.

Obviously, for the moment, caution is required, since it is simply a rumor. However, if this information is accurate, it could put pressure on Apple’s competitors, particularly Samsung. Moreover, “yeux1122” thinks that Samsung could advance the development of new form factors for its folding smartphones.

Towards a significant increase in shipments?

New folding smartphones always make headlines in the tech press. But for the moment, this type of device has not yet completely conquered the general public. In a recent publication, the IDC company explained that shipments of folding smartphones still have a low volume, compared to the overall smartphone market. However, this segment continues to show double-digit growth, with a 10.5% increase expected in 2024. And this is expected to continue in the coming years.

In any case, Apple’s arrival on the folding smartphone market could stimulate it and significantly increase global shipments. But it’s possible that Apple won’t release a folding iPhone for a while. Indeed, crease marks, which are acceptable for other brands, may not be acceptable for Apple.
While several Android smartphone brands already offer folding smartphones, Apple is currently content with classic iPhones

  • But for a while, rumors have suggested that the firm is studying this technology
  • And according to a source, it has already launched the “official development process” of the foldable iPhone
  • If this information is true, it could push competitors to improve their offerings
