Apple is one of the most valued companies in the worldif not directly the first, and that means that they face, every month, judicial problems, lawsuits, and even disputes with organizations such as the European Union itself, something to which we are already accustomed.
However, although they usually come out with fines and financial costs, in this case it seems that it is different, and not one of their worst fears would have ended, due to the dismissal of a lawsuit that would have caused them a large amount of losses.
Apple wins the court battle
Surely you have heard of Apple and its famous App Store. Well, the company just won a pretty important legal victory. Turns out there was a class action lawsuit accusing Apple of monopoly: People said they could only buy apps through the App Store and that inflated prices. After years of back and forth in court, Judge Yvonne González Rogers decided that the plaintiffs failed to prove that all consumers had actually been harmed. Basically, there was not enough evidence to call for collective compensation.
The case has been a real up and down: in 2022 the judge rejected the lawsuit, in 2024 she accepted it, and now she discards it again. Because? Because the damage calculations presented by the plaintiffs were seriously flawed. For example, they grouped together names that were not related to each other, confused addresses or payment cards… things that make it almost impossible to prove real harm to all consumers.
For Apple, this is a huge relief. not only millions are saved in possible compensations, but also reinforces his argument that maintaining control over the App Store helps ensure security and quality. Of course, this does not mean that criticism of its business model disappears, but it does make it quite difficult for anyone to achieve collective compensation.
At the end of the day, Apple makes a lot more than money. This victory shows that it continues to do things its way: controlling its ecosystem and dictating the rules of the game. Will discussions continue about whether it is a monopoly? Clear. But taking down Apple is not easy. For those of us who use their products, it probably won't change much, but for the industry the message is clear: Apple knows how to defend itself and take advantage of the law in their favor, so few will dare to defy it.
The curious thing is that there are few companies that manage the digital board with such strategy and firmness. Criticizing Apple is fine, but this ruling makes it clear that it is not easy to bring it down. The company continues to consolidate its power and, although many question its business model, it shows that it knows how to protect itself and, at the same time, take care of its users, despite the fact that they sometimes also take advantage of them for their personal interest.
And you, what do you think of all this? Do you think Apple should strengthen these defenses even more, or is it normal for it to receive fines from time to time? Leave us your comment to know your opinion.
