This is clearly the big announcement of the day. CANAL+ has just informed its customers of the arrival of UHD HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on its main channel. An even more beautiful image and even more immersive sound, what more could you ask for.
Updated 26/11 : 4K and HDR are now available in the myCanal application on iOS and iPadOS for compatible channels. Dolby Vision and Atmos are also there, with an upgrade to Dolby Vision 8.1 in 2025.
A first in Europe
CANAL+ is not missing its 2024 start. The encrypted channel has just announced big news for fans of sports, films and series. From September 10, CANAL+ will support UHD HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Enough to make it the first permanent European channel available in HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
A new channel called CANAL+ UHD will be inducted for the occasion and will become the 2nd UHD channel available to subscribers after the 4K HDR Event. The UEFA Champion’s League, the Premier League, F1 and the TOP 14 will be broadcast on this new channel. The same goes for films and series.
To take advantage of it, you obviously have to make sure you have the right equipment. A minimum 4K HDR compatible device is required. Please note, the 1st generation Apple TV 4K is not compatible. On Apple TV, you must ensure that HDR is activated in the settings of the MyCANAL application. Ditto for activating dynamic range on Apple TV via Settings > Video and Audio > Adapt to content > Adapt to dynamic range > Yes.
A hell of a day for CANAL, especially since Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, took advantage of a short impromptu interview at the Venice International Film Festival this morning to reaffirm his pride in collaborating with CANAL+ on the French market. As a reminder, all CANAL subscribers have “free” access to Apple TV+, Apple’s streaming platform.
